Signs of the Times (let this be a call to action!)
The past few weeks have borne witness to disturbing developments around the world related to our changing climate. Below are the more recent reports, which illustrate the clear need for wholesale changes to be made within the existing system and outside of it as well. Here at ClimateDAO we look to bridge the present with the future and enable action to be taken through current systemic processes.
Heatwaves:
Rising temperatures have been the theme over the last month, with record temperatures in Japan, North Africa, Italy, Norway, India, Pakistan, Spain, France, Iran, China, Germany, and beyond.
The heatwave has brought drought and severe weather events to areas around the globe as well.
Global Organizations:
An official report from NATO (6/28) called climate change the “overarching challenge of our time.” The member nations announced an agreement to reduce emissions by “at least 45%” by 2030 and net-zero by 2050.
Meanwhile, at the G7 Summit, leaders are walking back pledges to reduce reliance on and production of fossil fuels, citing the Russia-Ukraine conflict. G7 leaders are also reportedly postponing aid to developing nations meant to mitigate climate change-related effects.
The SEC approved two proposals last month which will enhance scrutiny of ESG funds and practices. This is congruent with global regulators seeking to fight greenwashing in traditional markets.
Energy Developments:
Renewable energy in the United States provided 23.5% of the country’s energy in Q1, the highest share so far and the largest source of energy behind natural gas.
Meanwhile, blackouts and brownouts are expected in the Western, Southern, and Midwestern U.S. as record energy demand from the heatwave continues.
Food:
Droughts, floods, fires, and record heat are impacting global food production as well. New reports are being released about the negative impact that changing weather patterns are having on chilis, coffee, wheat, corn, apples, mustard, wine, and chocolate.
While rising food prices and shortages of available items on shelves are concerning, more alarming is the global risk for famine and proverty risk nations, as well as the producers of these food staples who will see their income dramatically impacted.
Climate Reporting:
Finally, a note on factual climate-related reporting…
Why are we reporting some of these very well-known climate-related issues? New data indicates that repetitive messaging is working to raise awareness and spur action regarding climate change.
"What we found suggests that people need to hear the same accurate messages about climate change again and again. If they only hear it once, it recedes very quickly.”
